Campsites near the Island Steam Fair and Isle of Wight Steam Railway

The Island Steam Fair is held at Havenstreet station on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway over the August bank holiday weekend. The 51st fair ran from Friday 28 to Monday 31 August 2026. The 2027 dates have not been announced, but on the same pattern it would run from Friday 27 to Monday 30 August 2027.

Havenstreet sits in the woods between Newport, Wootton and Ryde, so the campsites around Wootton Bridge are the closest. The railway is also worth a day on its own at any time of the season, and it is one of the easiest family days out to reach without a car.

    The fair

Expect steam traction engines, road rollers and showman's engines, vintage cars, military and commercial vehicles, a traditional fairground with gallopers, arena shows and a music stage from 11.30am to 5pm. Unlimited steam train rides are included with the full ticket. In 2026 an adult ticket with train travel cost £26 online or £29.50 on the gate, with up to three children free with each full-price adult. A show-only ticket was £20 online.

During the fair most trains run non-stop between Smallbrook Junction and Wootton and do not stop at Ashey. The same weekend usually brings the International Scooter Rally to Sandown, so book ferries and pitches early.

    Getting to Havenstreet

By car, use PO33 4DS. Havenstreet has a large free car park with room for motorhomes, and an overflow field opens on busy event days. Wootton station has a smaller car park.

By bus, route 33 between Newport and Ryde stops at Havenstreet, but only three return journeys run on school weekdays and five at weekends and in school holidays. Route 9 between Newport and Ryde stops right outside Wootton station, every 20 minutes Monday to Saturday and every 30 minutes on Sundays. From there you ride the steam train to Havenstreet.

By train, take Island Line to Smallbrook Junction and change across the platform. It is about 8 minutes from Ryde Pier Head, where the FastCat from Portsmouth lands. There is no road or footpath access to Smallbrook, so you can only arrive by train. Wootton station is on National Cycle Route 22, and bikes and dogs travel free.

    The railway on other days

The railway opens most days from April to October and daily in July and August, and in 2026 also ran from 3 December to 1 January. A standard-class ticket gives unlimited travel all day: £26 online for an adult, £10 for a child aged 5 to 17, and up to three children free with each full-price adult. At Havenstreet there is the Train Story Discovery Centre, a play park, cafés and a picnic area. Admission to the station without a train ride is free on normal days.
