Campsites for the Isle of Wight Walking Festival
The Isle of Wight Walking Festival runs twice a year, for nine days in May and nine days in early October. In 2026 the spring festival ran from 9 to 17 May and the autumn festival from 3 to 11 October. The 2027 dates have not been announced; on the same pattern they would be 8 to 16 May and 2 to 10 October 2027.
Walks are led by volunteers, many from the local Ramblers group, and most are free, but places must be booked online. They start all over the island and are listed under North, South, East, West and Central Wight, so the best campsite depends on which walks you pick. Each walk listing gives its start point and the bus route that serves it. The festival began in 1999 with 39 walks and is one of the longest-running in the UK.
8 to 16 May 2027 dates to be confirmed

Which campsites are open for each festival
May is easy: almost every site on the island is open. October is harder. Compton Farm at Brook and Chine Farm at Atherfield both close at the end of September, so they are out for the autumn festival. Stoats Farm at Totland and Grange Farm at Brighstone stay open until 31 October, Kite Hill Farm at Wootton until late October, and New Bank End Farm at St Lawrence is open all year. Check each site's dates on its page before you book.
Walking from the pitch
For the West Wight walks, Stoats Farm is the classic base: footpaths lead from the site straight up onto Tennyson Down, then on to the Needles or down to Freshwater Bay. Compton Farm sits in a chalk valley on National Trust land a quarter of a mile from Compton Bay, with the downs above. Grange Farm and Chine Farm are clifftop fields on the Military Road beside the Isle of Wight Coastal Path.
In the south, Downsview CL above Niton has footpaths leading off the site and is open from mid-April to mid-October, covering both festivals. New Bank End Farm has a path towards the coves of the Undercliff, with Ventnor about half an hour on foot.
Buses to the walk start points
Southern Vectis route 7 runs about every half hour from Newport to Yarmouth, Freshwater, Totland and Alum Bay. Route 12 goes from Newport through Shorwell and Brighstone to Compton Bay, Freshwater and Alum Bay, about six times a day. Route 9 runs every 20 minutes Monday to Saturday between Newport and Ryde via Wootton, and route 3 links Newport, Godshill, Wroxall, Ventnor, Shanklin, Sandown and Ryde about every 30 minutes.
For the autumn 2026 festival Southern Vectis gave 10% off its 7-day Freedom tickets in the app, so look out for a similar offer in 2027. Linear walks are where a campsite near a bus route pays off: you can walk one way and ride back.
Ferry offers
Wightlink gives festival walkers 20% off foot, car and motorcycle crossings for both the spring and autumn festivals. Hovertravel offered 25% off in autumn 2026 with code WALKFEST25, and Red Funnel offered 15% off its car ferry and Red Jet day returns at £13.50. If you camp in the West Wight, the Lymington to Yarmouth crossing lands you closest.
