Campsites near the Isle of Wight Randonnée start at Yarmouth
The Isle of Wight Randonnée is on Sunday 5 September 2027. It is a non-competitive 100km ride right round the Island, clockwise on the Round the Island Cycle Route, with about 1,500 metres of climbing. Since 2026 it has been run by Mountbatten Isle of Wight, the Island's hospice, with the Wayfarers cycling club, and it moved from the early May bank holiday to early September.
There is no single start line. You start and finish at whichever official checkpoint suits you, riding between 9am and 6pm. In 2026 the start points were East Cowes, Wootton, Bembridge, Ventnor Rugby Club on Whitwell Road, and Yarmouth. Alverstone was a checkpoint only. This page is centred on Yarmouth, which has the Wightlink ferry from Lymington and plenty of campsites within a few kilometres, so you can ride to the start and back to your tent.

Mountbatten suggests raising £250 in sponsorship, but you can ride without reaching it. Riders must be 16 or over, and 16 and 17 year olds must ride with a parent or guardian.
Helmets are compulsory. The roads stay open to traffic, so the Highway Code applies all the way round. There are no service points, so carry a pump, tubes and a basic repair kit. There is nowhere to charge an e-bike on the route. Only the full 100km route ran in 2026; the organisers hope to bring back a 50km Mini Randonnée. You can register interest in 2027 on the Mountbatten website.
The route from Yarmouth
The ride follows the signed Round the Island Cycle Route, with extra Randonnée signs at key junctions. It has run clockwise since 2013 to ease the queues at the Cowes floating bridge. From Yarmouth you head east through Shalfleet to Cowes, cross the Medina to the East Cowes checkpoint, then on through Wootton to Ryde and the Bembridge checkpoint. The route turns inland to Alverstone, carries on to Ventnor Rugby Club, and comes home along the south-west coast through Chale, Brighstone and Freshwater. Our cycling guide covers the hills and where to eat.
Checkpoints serve food and drink and are run by local schools and community groups, who keep the donations they collect, so a little cash is handy.
Ferries and where to stay
Part of the reason for the move to September was quieter roads and cheaper crossings. For 2026 Wightlink, which runs Lymington to Yarmouth, gave 20% off foot, car and motorcycle fares for travel from the Saturday to the Monday of Randonnée weekend, booked online with the event name. Look for a similar offer for 2027. If you come on Red Funnel to East Cowes, start there instead and see campsites near the East Cowes ferry.
Coming from the mainland, the easy plan is to cross on the Saturday and stay Saturday and Sunday nights. Early September is after the school holidays, but some West Wight sites close in mid-September, so check the season. The Isle of Wight Classic Motor Show is the following weekend if you want to stay on.
