The Shanklin Shuttle: Shanklin's summer seafront bus, and the campsites near it
The Shanklin Shuttle is a small summer-only loop run by Southern Vectis. It starts at Shanklin Bus Station, calls at the railway station, drops down to the Esplanade, then climbs back through the Old Village by Shanklin Chine to the bus station. The loop takes about 25 minutes and saves the steep walk between the town and the beach.
In 2026 it ran daily from 23 May to 26 September, and it is not running now. Southern Vectis had not published 2027 dates when we checked in October 2026; in recent years it has returned in May.
Stop: Shanklin, Rail Station · From Shanklin Railway Station or the bus station, about 500m, 7 minutes, via Carter Avenue and part of the old railway path.
Buses left Shanklin Bus Station (stand B) every 30 minutes from 09:45 to 17:15, with no 13:15 trip. The afternoon journeys from 14:45 did not run Monday to Friday between 1 June and 24 July, or between 1 and 25 September, so outside school holidays weekday buses stopped after lunch. In 2026 it used a closed-top bus.
Tickets
The shuttle is outside the government's £3 fare scheme. In 2026 an adult single was £3.10 and a 24-hour hop on, hop off ticket £5.20. A child single was £1.80, or £2.60 for 24 hours, and under 5s rode free. A family 24-hour ticket was £11.90.
Southern Vectis Rover, Rover and Breezer, and Freedom tickets are accepted, but concessionary bus passes are not. There is an over 60s fare instead, £1.80 single or £2.60 for 24 hours.
Campsites you can reach
Two big holiday parks sit on the inland edge of Shanklin. Lower Hyde is about 500m, a 7 minute walk, from the bus and railway station stops, partly along the old railway path towards Wroxall.
Landguard is around 1.2km from the railway station stop, so the shuttle is less use there. All year, route 22 stops closer to both parks, and routes 2 and 3 serve Shanklin Bus Station.
Luggage, dogs and bikes
Southern Vectis carries luggage at the driver's discretion. Dogs ride free, normally up to two, if the driver agrees and not on seats. Bikes need the driver's agreement, and e-bikes and e-scooters are not allowed.
Where it connects
The shuttle stops at Shanklin station, the end of Island Line from Ryde Pier Head, where the FastCat from Portsmouth lands. Shanklin Bus Station is on routes 2 and 3. See campsites in Shanklin and camping without a car.
