ViewYou cannot camp at Fort Victoria. It is a country park owned by the Isle of Wight Council, and overnight stays are not part of it. The nearest campsite with pitches is Heathfield Farm on the edge of Freshwater, about 2km south. Linstone Chine's Cliff End bungalows sit right next to the park.
The park is the island's largest country park: 22 hectares of woodland around a Victorian fort on the Solent, looking straight across to Hurst Castle and the New Forest. Parking is free, the beach has no dog restrictions at any time of year, and the rangers' base is staffed all year.

The Isle of Wight Coastal Path runs through the park along the old Military Road. Heading east it is a gentle walk to Yarmouth, about 2km, so Fort Victoria makes an easy first or last outing if you are on the Lymington to Yarmouth ferry. Heading south-west the path goes on to Colwell Bay and Totland.
From Heathfield Farm, walk up to the coast path above Colwell Bay and follow it north, about 25 to 30 minutes. From Glamping The Wight Way by the River Yar it is a similar distance through Norton.
About 1km of beach runs either side of the fort. It is fully tidal, so check the tide times. It is good for rock pooling and one of the island's best for beachcombing: fossil crocodile skin and turtle shell turn up regularly in the shingle. Sconce Point is a favourite with birdwatchers for seabird passage in spring and autumn.
Do not swim here. The council calls the water between Fort Victoria and Hurst Castle very dangerous because of strong tidal currents. It is a good spot to watch the shipping, and to see the yachts in the annual Round the Island Race.
Privately run attractions open in the fort buildings through the summer season, each with its own hours and prices. They include the Island Planetarium, a reptilarium and terrapin sanctuary, a marine aquarium, a model railway layout, the Underwater Archaeology Centre and Verdi's Cafe. There are toilets, and three barbecues that families of up to 12 can use free on a first come, first served basis.
In February 2026 the council proposed adding pay-and-display charges at Fort Victoria in its 2026/27 budget. In October 2026 it was still described as free parking, and it is not on the council's tariff list for the West Wight car parks, but check the signs on arrival. The open-top Needles Breezer bus calls at the country park in season.
No. Fort Victoria Country Park is run by the Isle of Wight Council and does not offer camping. The nearest campsite with pitches is Heathfield Farm in Freshwater, about 2km away, and Linstone Chine's holiday bungalows are next to the park.
The council still listed Fort Victoria as free parking in October 2026, although it proposed new pay-and-display charges there in its 2026/27 budget. Check the signs when you arrive.
Yes. There are no dog restrictions on the beach at Fort Victoria at any time of year, and the park is open all year.
Yes. The Isle of Wight Coastal Path runs through the park and along the old military road to Yarmouth, about 2km. It is an easy walk for ferry foot passengers.
Swimming is not advised. The council warns that the water between Fort Victoria and Hurst Castle is very dangerous, with strong, fast tidal currents. Colwell Bay, 1.5km south, is the calmer swimming beach.
