With children, the Lymington boat is cheaper than it looks if you book the right ticket. Under-5s travel free as foot passengers, and Wightlink's family foot tickets, for one or two adults with children aged 5 to 15 and up to five people in all, can only be bought by phone or at the port.
The nearest family outing from the ramp is Fort Victoria, about 2km west along the coast path, with crabbing from the sea wall, rock pooling and a planetarium. Tapnell Farm, about 2.3 miles away, runs a farm park open seven days a week with indoor play, free for its glamping guests. Westfield Farm's heated cabins at Cranmore sleep four and are let all year.
Watch the clock on arrival day. Heathfield Farm takes no arrivals after 7.30pm, Stoats Farm none after 8pm, and Camp Wight's arrival window is 3pm to 6pm. See camping with kids.
