Dog friendly campsites near the Needles, Isle of Wight

Of the 7 campsites within 4.3 miles of the Needles, 4 take dogs.

Dogs on leads are welcome at both halves of the Needles. The National Trust lets them across the whole Old Battery site and leaves water bowls outside the tea room. At the Landmark Attraction they can go round the site, onto the beach and on the boat trips, but not on the chairlift or indoors, so with a dog you take the 185 steps down to Alum Bay.

The walk there needs more care. Cattle graze Tennyson Down wearing GPS collars, which use an audio warning and, if needed, a mild electric pulse in place of fences. The Trust asks for short leads near them and says not to touch the collars. From 1 March to 31 July dogs must also be on leads where signs mark ground-nesting birds, and the cliff edges are unfenced.

For a run on the sand in summer, Totland Bay has no seasonal ban, and Colwell Bay is open to dogs all year east of the slipway. The Red Lion in Freshwater welcomes dogs, and The Carisbrooke Vets has a branch on School Green Road in Freshwater with limited hours. See camping with dogs.

Questions people ask

Can dogs go on the Needles chairlift?

Yes. The National Trust grazes cattle on Tennyson Down, kept in by GPS collars rather than fences. Keep dogs on a short lead near them, and if the cattle approach, let the dog off the lead.

Which beach near the Needles allows dogs in summer?
