ViewOf the 9 campsites within 2.5 miles of Freshwater Bay, 8 are good for families.
Freshwater Bay suits families who like rocks and walks more than sandcastles. The beach is mostly pebbles, and the nearest big sand is Compton Bay, about 3km east and a quarter of a mile from Compton Farm, which also has a play area and a wildflower meadow to run about in.
Up from the seafront, Dimbola, the photography museum in Julia Margaret Cameron's old home, charged £1.70 for children aged 5 to 10, £3.00 for 11 to 17 and nothing for under-5s in 2026, with adults £7.60. It has a tea room and a permanent exhibition on the Isle of Wight festivals.
For a wet day, Tapnell Farm Park, about 2 miles inland, is open seven days a week with indoor play as well as animals, and guests in its glamping get in free. The Freshwater area also has the West Wight Sports Centre pool. Older children can manage the climb from the bay to the Tennyson Monument, but keep them back from the unfenced cliff edges.
