Know the crossing rules before you drive on at Portsmouth. On Wightlink's car ferries, dogs may travel only in the Pet Friendly areas, never on seats, and you cannot stay on the car deck with your dog. Wightlink can charge a £50 cleaning fee if a dog fouls the port and you do not clean up. XL Bully dogs must be leashed and muzzled.
Once you are off, Kite Hill Farm is the easiest first stop. It is about 25 minutes' walk from the ramp, charges nothing for dogs, has a dog walking area and has Firestone Copse beside it. Quarr Abbey, under 1 km east of the terminal as the crow flies, welcomes dogs on leads in its grounds and tea garden, with water bowls, but not inside the tea room.
