Isle of Wight Coastal Path: Shanklin and Sandown to Ryde
About 14 miles (22.8km) from Shanklin Esplanade to Ryde Pier, or 12 miles (19.3km) if you start at Sandown Pier, as Visit Isle of Wight's Sandown to Ryde section does. Allow 6 to 7 hours from Shanklin. The one real climb is Culver Down. The rest is promenade, low cliffs, lanes round Bembridge Harbour, woods and sea wall.
From Shanklin to Culver Down it is King Charles III England Coast Path section IOW3 (opened January 2026). From Culver Down to Ryde it is section IOW2, approved in May 2025 but not yet open, so expect the older seagull signs and several inland stretches.
Follow the sea wall from Shanklin to Sandown Pier (2.2 miles), past the zoo to Yaverland. Climb about 2km up Red Cliff to the Yarborough Monument on Culver Down, where the Culver Haven Inn opens seasonally. The chalk path down towards Whitecliff Bay is slippery when damp.
Past Whitecliff Bay and the Foreland the route uses Bembridge roads, back to the shore by the Crab and Lobster Inn, then on to Bembridge Point at 8.5 miles. Walk about 1.5km of Embankment Road round Bembridge Harbour, cross to St Helens Duver and pass the old church tower. The path goes inland by Priory Woods to Seagrove Bay and Seaview, then follows the sea wall past Puckpool and Appley to Ryde.
Closures, diversions and tides (checked 16 October 2026)
Bembridge: coastal path BB10 has been closed between Forelands Field Road and footpath BB14 since 20 November 2024 because of land movement. Use Forelands Field Road, Howgate Road and BB14. Surface works also close BB10 behind the Crab and Lobster from 12 to 16 October 2026 (use Paddock Drive slipway, Paddock Drive, Howgate Road and Forelands Field Road), and for 160m west of BB14 from 15 to 30 October 2026 (use Jenny Street's Lane, Hillway Road, Howgate Road and BB14).
Seaview: footpath R89 in Priory Woods has been closed since 24 September 2024 by landslips. Bypass on paths R74, R84 and R85. At low tide you can keep to the shore round Bembridge Point, and round Horestone Point with some scrambling over rocks. At high tide take the inland routes.
Trains, buses, food and water
Island Line trains link Ryde, Brading, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin, the quickest way back. Bus route 8 (Ryde, Seaview, St Helens, Bembridge, Sandown, Newport) runs about every 30 minutes in the day, so you can break the stage at Bembridge or St Helens. Toilets are frequent: Sandown Eastern Esplanade, Yaverland car park, Bembridge Lane End and The Point, St Helens Duver, Seagrove Bay, Puckpool Park and Appley Park. Sandown's Pier Street toilets are closed until further notice.
