ViewAbout 7 miles (11.5km) from Grange Chine to Niton, which takes 3.5 to 4 hours. The first two thirds are level clifftop over grass and crumbling clay, past Cowleaze, Barnes and Shepherd's Chines to Atherfield Point and Chale Bay. Then the path climbs past Blackgang Chine to the top of Gore Cliff, with St Catherine's Lighthouse below, and drops into Niton.
This stretch is King Charles III England Coast Path section IOW4, opened on 9 September 2026. It is exposed, with no shade or shelter between Brighstone and Chale. The cliffs are slipping, so stay on the signed line and well back from the edge.

From Grange Chine pass the trig point on Barnes High and cross the chines to Shepherd's Chine and the old Atherfield Bay holiday camp, now Sandy Lanes Resort. Atherfield Point is 2.9 miles in. At Whale Chine walk a short way along the Military Road to get round the chine, then cross fields past Walpen Chine to Chale at 5.5 miles. The Wight Mouse Inn is by Chale church.
Climb beside Blackgang Road past Blackgang Chine to the viewpoint car park, then follow the open top of Gore Cliff with the lighthouse below. The path drops through copses and a deep holloway to Niton.
Shepherd's Chine: part of footpath BS1, including the beach steps, is closed by landslips. Use the grass verge beside the Military Road to rejoin the path. Whale Chine: footpath C34, the path and steps down to the beach, is permanently closed, with no alternative. This does not block the coast path.
Niton: part of footpath NT38 between Castlehaven caravan site and National Trust land is closed by a landslip, with a link over National Trust land between NT38 and NT40 instead. Footpath NT46 at Castlehaven has been closed since 3 May 2024, with no alternative.
Route 6 (Newport to Ventnor via Chale, Blackgang Chine and Niton) runs about every 2 hours. Route 12 serves Brighstone. To return to the start, take the 6 to Newport and the 12 out. Toilets are in Brighstone car park and on Church Street in Niton. Food: the Wight Mouse Inn at Chale and the Buddle Inn at Niton (check its opening days).
Yes, as England Coast Path section IOW4 since 9 September 2026, with a short Military Road verge diversion at Shepherd's Chine. Landslips change it often, so check the council closures list.
Chine Farm is on the path at Atherfield (May to September). Warren Hill Camp has bell tents. Paradise Cottage CS near Chale is for Club members. At Niton there are static caravans at Castlehaven and Meadowview.
